Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnam

The Mid Autumn Festival is one of the biggest Festival in the year, just behind Lunar New Year. The Festival held on 15th of 8th Lunar month when the Moon is full, largest and brightest throughout the year.
It is one of the most important and meaningful festivals in Vietnam. It not only recalls the family love and reunion, but is also a festival for both children and adults in Vietnam.

Moon cakes are the specific cakes and are only on this festival. Moon cake, which is made from flavor, meat, egg, dried fruit, pumpkin’s seed, peanut, is so sweet and good tasting. Everyone sounds “How delicious Moon cakes are!” after tasting them and can’t say no with them. Moon cakes symbolize Luck, Happiness, Health and Wealth on the Mid-Autumn day.

Tet Trung Thu is considered to be another Children’s Day in Vietnam as the main purpose of celebration is for the children. With the aim of bringing happiness and joy to the kids through traditional customs, all the activities in this occasion focus on folk dancing, singing or games.

On this day, the adults and the parents prepare many different foods - Moon cakes, candies, biscuits, jellies, and fruit, such as grapefruit, longan fruit, bananas, apples, mango, etc.
This festival is a good example of Vietnamese traditional culture. In recent years, regardless of the fact that some traditional toys have been replaced by modern ones, the traditional performance has been kept and developed.
On the night of the full moon, children bearing brightly colored lanterns form raucous processions and tour their neighborhoods singing songs. Other groups of children parade through the streets, going from door to door and asking the owners for their permission to pe
rform the lion dance. These lion dances are fascinating, and huge numbers of children, ranging from little kids to teenagers, participate in this activity. As a result of having so many groups of children marching around, the streets of the cities echo with the sound of drums, as dozens of lions roam about.

Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important Vietnamese festivals in Vietnamese culture, is an opportunity for friends and families to gather, give thanks and pray for a better future. It’s a warm and cozy atmosphere when Vietnamese people turn back to treasure their core values – family bond and deep empathy for others.
