Parrying in the new year

Vietnamese people often go to Pagoda or Temple at the beginning of each Lunar New Year to pray for safety, health, good luck, prosperity, and happiness during the year.

After praying in front of our ancestors on New Year’s Eve, many people begin their pilgrimage to nearby pagodas to pray for health and luck for themselves and their loved ones. Many people sincerely believe that all wishes made on New Year’s Eve will come true.

Praying on Tet Holiday in Viet Nam

The first half of the first lunar month is the best time for a pilgrimage. Apart from praying for happiness, prosperity and good health for family, visiting pagodas gives they a chance to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at religious place.

The time they visit pagodas and temples called “xuat hanh dau nam” in Vietnamese, simply translated as the first going out in the New Year to bring lucky home.

Even though they are not religious, but visiting a Pagoda in the spring has become the culture of Vietnamese life. Vietnamese people believe that going to the pagoda is not only to pray for good things for the coming year but is also the time to spend time on their spiritual life and remember the nation's roots.

In Vietnam, the custom is described as Pray means not only visiting but also showing respects in all sincerity to Buddha and Gods of the temples. No matter how busy Vietnamese are during the hilarious atmosphere of Tet, everyone attempts to burn an incense to wish for best wishes for the New Year like healthiness, happiness and wealthiest.

Although people in all areas visit temples and pagodas for the same purposes, the way they conduct this practice varies greatly from this region to another.

Although there is a difference in the way people conduct the pilgrimage, this noble tradition still remains its real meaning, in which any barrier of age, status or sex are eliminated, everyone unite there, in a mutual spiritual world.

When visit pagodas and temples they avoid some doing:
Do not bring anything from the pagoda or temple to thier house if that is not what the monks offer to them.
Do not try to touch the statues.
Do not run, laugh and do not speak loudly in places of worship.
Do not smoke, chew gum or spit inside temples and pagodas.
Try not to stand upright in the middle of the altar.
Do not wear too much-exposed clothing or tight clothing such as skinny, tank top,…
The best clothes to visit temples and pagodas are long-sleeved shirts, pants or at least clothes can cover your underarms and your knees.
