Viet Nam and mother's day celebration

Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It’s not a federal holiday, but Mother’s Day is widely celebrated as a special day to honor all mothers and motherhood. Together, let’s honor the women who raised us—and all the mothers who sacrificed for their children.

Although the custom of setting aside a day to honor mothers has ancient roots, our observance of Mother’s Day mainly came about through the efforts of a devoted daughter, Anna M. Jarvis.

After the death of her own mother in 1905, Jarvis wanted to recognize the sacrifices mothers made for their children. She organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration in May 1908 at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia.

On May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May Mother’s Day, and within a few years, the idea gained worldwide prominence.

While some countries such as Japan, Germany, Canada and Brazil, celebrate mother’s day in the month of May, other countries including; Egypt, UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar celebrate mother’s day in March. Mothers' Day in Vietnam has a celebration every year on on lunar July 15th.

Mother's day in Viet Nam comes from the legend behind the festival dates back to the earliest of Buddhism. The ceremony is a great chance for people to express their gratitude to their parents. Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike - who wish to express their gratefulness and appreciation towards their mothers. They believe rose has been a symbol of love and sharing among parents and their children.

For this reason, during its mother’s day celebrations, it is common to see food offerings, and other items to offer the hungry spirits, when the kingdoms of heaven, hell and earth have been opened.
The purpose of this ritual is to feed the souls of the departed and pray for their salvation. It is also considered as a way people to abide by their duties to their families.
